If you sense something..

What does autumn mean for Japanese?

“Autumn’s here. To the eye it’s not quite apparent, but with the sound of the wind, I suddenly became aware.”
Fujiwara no Toshiyuki, a Japanese waka poet during the Heian period, depicted the coming of autumn as so.

If you sense something soft in the touch of the air, it might be a sign of fall. Gently, the breeze brings us a new season, and heals our bodies and soul, which have been exhausted from the hot, humid weather that seemed to drag on forever. In fact, summer in Japan is harsh; it wears us out like climbing up a mountain. The farther we go, the closer to death we become. So, it is as if we are finally on the top of the mountain when we feel the arrival of fall, how refreshing it is, and how beautiful the world appears! It’s no wonder that we have a lot of phrases related to autumn such as:

(Fall is the best season for food)”

(Fall is the best season for reading)”

(Fall is the best season for art)”

(Fall is the best season for reading)”

In the end, fall is the best season for us to do anything.

Furthermore, we have another thing that we look forward to in late autumn: “紅葉 (autumn foliage).” There are many beautiful famous sites in Japan and we love to go all the way to the mountains and rivers just to admire the leaves colored in red and gold.

“Even when the gods sway held in the ancient days, I have never heard that water gleamed with autumn red as it does in Tatsuta’s stream.”

Ariwara no Narihira, a Japanese waka poet during the Heian Period, might have stopped in fascination at the sight of water studded with fiery-crimson leaves. What is amazing is that we can visualize the picture easily even today, over a thousand years after he wrote this poem.

And then another wind will blow. If you sense something chilly in the air, it might be a sign of winter. Autumn comes on the wind and will go with the wind.

If you sense something chilly in the air, it might be a sign of winter. Autumn comes on the wind and will go with the wind.
